The implementation of gender equality strategies through numerous structural and individual promotion measures shows significant success in the increasing number of female professors at the University of Cologne, the adequate representation of women in central bodies, and significant increase in the number of young women scientists (41% in 2018, 21% in 2012). Further Data can be found in the UoC's annual Gender Data Report (see right).
External funding lines and evaluations unterline the successful developments of the UoC:
NRW Gender Report 2022
The Coordination and Research Office of the NRW Women's and Gender Studies Network produces the Gender-Report every three years, which contains up-to-date analyses of gender relations at all qualification and career levels and of gender equality practices at universities. The University of Cologne is ranked first across all qualification levels and status groups for the fourth time in a row; in the group of female professors, it takes third place. At the University Hospital of Cologne, female professors continue to be significantly underrepresented compared to the state average, with a current share of only 16.4%, putting it in 6th place out of 7 university hospitals in NRW. The gender pay gap among female professors was still above average in the evaluation year 2020.

In order to evaluate its gender equality policy measures, the University of Cologne has again participated in the assessment of the TOTAL E-QUALITY e.V. association and was (after 2004, 2007, 2014 and 2018) awarded the "TOTAL E-QUALITY Predicate for Equal Opportunities and Diversity" for its successful gender equality and diversity policy in the summer of 2022. DHV seal of approval for the UoC for fair and transparent appointment procedures in 2021
The University of Cologne received the seal of approval of the German University Association (DHV) for fair and transparent appointment negotiations for another five years, which it has held since 2014. It has thus successfully passed the re-audit process, which is due after three years, for the second time after 2017. High-quality appointment procedures also serve to improve equal opportunities in the selection of professors. The seal does not include the university's Faculty of Medicine. Further information on the DHV seal of approval can be found here.
University Ranking of the CEWS 2021
The "University Ranking by Equality Aspects 2021" of the CEWS ranks the University of Cologne 6th out of 12 in the overall assessment of the proportion of women at scientific qualification levels. The university thus continues to rank among the best universities in NRW.
University of Cologne is awarded as "LGBTIQ+ Diversity Champion" 2021
The University of Cologne was rated as "LGBTIQ+ Diversity Champion" in the Proudr LGBTIQ+ Campus Index in June 2021. The index recognizes an open, queer*-friendly, and inclusive culture. Only three out of 62 universities scored over 80% of the audit points and were rewarded as "LGBTIQ+ Diversity Champions". The University of Cologne leads the index with 88%. The University of Cologne's strong commitment to equal opportunities, including LGBTIQ+ individuals, is thus also recognized externally. The University of Cologne's completed questionnaire on the audit can be found here.
Success in "Female Professors' Program III": Positive evaluation of the equal opportunities future concept 2019-2024 of the UoC
The Equal Opportunities Future Concept 2019-2024 entitled "zukunft-gleichstellung@uzk" of the University of Cologne received a positive assessment in the third funding round of the Federal and State Women Professors' Programme (see GWK press release of 09.11.2018). In a second step, the University of Cologne can thus apply for funding of three newly appointed female professors in the amount of 1.6 million euros for the years 2019-2024. The UoC has already submitted three applications for funding to the project management organisation in 2019. Two applications have already been approved. This means that the UzK already has around €1.2 million in additional funding available for the implementation of gender equality measures up to 2024. These will be used, among other things, to improve support for gender-sensitive appointment procedures, to promote female scientists with disabilities, and to integrate equal opportunities and gender and queer studies into studies and teaching. The university is thus seamlessly building on the successes achieved in the first and second funding phases of the programme.
